Q&A:
Q: When should I start wearing a maternity bra?
A: It is recommended that you are fitted and start wearing a maternity bra 6-12 weeks into your pregnancy. When you start wearing the maternity bra the band should be fastened to a tight setting, allowing for an expanding rib cage.
Q: What is the difference between a regular bra and a maternity/nursing bra?
A: Maternity and nursing bras are constructed to accommodate your breasts while providing room for change and excellent support. They typically have extra band length to accommodate your changing body; wider elastic under the bust to support the diaphragm; a wider bra strap to provide support and natural fabrics to allow the skin to breathe. Additionally, nursing bras have easy to remove bra strap clips for discreet nursing.
Q: When should I start wearing a nursing bra?
A: You should be fitted and purchase your nursing bra at least 1 month before your due date or 28 weeks into your pregnancy. In contrast to a maternity bra, the nursing bra band should initially be fastened to a loose setting, leaving room to tighten the band as your rib cage returns to normal.
Q: During my pregnancy and while nursing should I wear an underwire or non-underwire bra?
A: When fitted properly, both underwire and non-underwire bras can be comfortable. If an underwire bra is not properly fitted, it could harm your breast tissue and milk ducts. As a result try to avoid wearing underwire bras during the weeks while you are lactating (typically the week before and after giving birth).
